What a night this had potential to be for Sir Alex Ferguson.
He rocked up at Anfield hoping to see his former side get one over on the club he openly despised while manager of Manchester United.
Before the game kicked off he was pictured smiling, seemingly full of confidence, or bravado, that the Red Devils could score a memorable victory.
His optimism proved to be misplaced as Liverpool scored a goal in each half to beat United 2-0, a healthy lead to take into the second leg with no away goal conceded.
Even before Roberto Firmino scored the second goal, the Scotsman was pictured in the stands with a very different mood.

His sour look was even completed by a sorry head shake, in the midst of a nightmare, watching a listless United side lose to Liverpool.

Louis van Gaal could have a lifeline his side pull off a comeback at Old Trafford, but it is not looking good for the Dutchman and if Sir Alex yields any boardroom influence, it's hard to see him vouching for the current manager to stay.
A rapidly changing mood for Sir Alex, and potentially a swift exit for Van Gaal.
