HITC Sport reported last night how Newcastle United are preparing to offer Rafa Benitez the manager's job as they bid to earn promotion.
Steve McClaren is believed to be on borrowed time, with the Magpies sitting in the relegation zone with 10 games remaining.
Benitez is out of work after being fired by Real Madrid midway through the season, with the Spanish giants notoriously ruthless for managers.
Newcastle will be hoping to appoint the Spaniard ahead of Monday's Premier League fixture away to Leicester City.
Benitez worked briefly at Chelsea, even winning the Europa League, but he is best known in England for a memorable spell with Liverpool.
His Liverpool side won the Champions League with the Reds in 2005, beating AC Milan in the final on penalties, and came close to managing the team to the Premier League title in 2008/09.
He still has a home in Merseyside and retains a strong affinity with the fanbase. When the Liverpool job becomes occasionally vacant, his name always comes up as a potential candidate, with there a sense of unfinished business regarding his near miss at a league win.
The prospect of him landing up at fellow Premier League side Newcastle, even if only briefly, has stirred up mixed emotions from fans, who believe he could do a very good job for the relegation threatened side.
Here is a look at how supporters reacted on Twitter to the speculation...
Rafa Benitez is Newcastle's top managerial target. His career stagnated after leaving #LFC. He hasn't been able to make an impact elsewhere.— Anfield Observer (@AnfieldObserver) March 8, 2016
Bizarre Rafa going to Newcastle, he better than that. Then again id rather that than him ending up at Everton. Suprised #LFC— Terry (@Terry_LFC5) March 9, 2016
Why on earth is Rafa.... RAFA agreeing to manage Newcastle!? #LFC— flann the man (@KarlOsborne92) March 9, 2016
