The former Sunderland midfielder and life-long Newcastle fan has taken to social media.
The Daily Mail (among many others) report that the Spaniard could be set to replace Steve McClaren.
And that excites Hutchison:
Now if Newcastle get Rafa,That’s an appointment— Don Hutchison (@donhutch4) March 10, 2016
But several supporters - some Newcastle, some neutral and some Sunderland... - were far from convinced Benitez is the man for the Magpies.
For starters, he hasn't managed a club lower down the table since the 1990s. His forte is taking a team almost at the top nearer the top by spending huge fortunes.
Since leaving Liverpool, Benitez hasn't necessarily managed that, either. That's why Sunderland supporters may be quick to note Rafa's failure at Real Madrid, while Newcastle fans may be worried at the same time.
Many of the Newcastle faithful, of course, are delighted by the prospect of Benitez coming in - but still fear it's simply 10-20 games too late to keep them in the Premier League.
@donhutch4 yes don, a man that couldnt succeed with Bale, Benzema & Ronaldo definitely will with Townsend, Shelvey and Perez— Tom Albrighton (@TMALBRGHTN) March 10, 2016
@donhutch4 great appointment of it was the start of the season but with 10 games and a dog fight on his hands seems a weird one— Noel O'Brien (@NOELY1982) March 10, 2016
@donhutch4 Bet he can't wait for a cold Tuesday night in Sheffied, still think we'll go down. Should have done weeks ago— Ryan Windsor (@Ry_The_Legend) March 10, 2016
