The Spaniard could be the next permanent manager of Newcastle United if reports are to be believed.
Steve McClaren remains in charge at St James’ Park despite plenty of speculation in recent days. But with Newcastle currently 19th in the Premier League, one point from safety with 10 matches remaining, they really need to turn things round sooner rather than later.
Newcastle’s next match is away to league leaders Leicester City on Monday evening, and having taken training on Thursday it seems McClaren will remain in charge for that match…unless something dramatic happens in the next couple of days.
Newcastle fans would be forgiven for wanting a change now, with some feeling McClaren’s position has become untenable, so the odds on what Benitez may do at the club in due course will make for interesting reading.
Ladbrokes make the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss 1/4 to take over at Newcastle before the end of the season, but he has odds of 6/4 to keep the club in the Premier League – not great for those fans expecting a big turnaround between now and May.
For those seeking success next season, Benitez is currently 12/1 to win a trophy with the club in the 2016/2017 campaign if he is in charge, but whether that is the Championship title or another piece of silverware remains to be seen.
