Wimmer and Son could be key for Tottenham given their past experience against Dortmund

The Tottenham Hotspur defender won his only previous match against Dortmund while the attacker has five goals in six appearances against them.

Tottenham Hotspur’s fine campaign continues on Thursday evening when they take on German club Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 of the Europa League.

Spurs are currently second in the Premier League and fighting for a famous double but they will have to be at their best to defeat Dortmund in their own backyard.

The Bundesliga side are currently second in their domestic table, five points behind Bayern Munich having lost just three times all season, but Tottenham have two unlikely players who could prove vital to their cause.

Summer signings Heung-Min Son and Kevin Wimmer have impressed for Spurs so far, but Thursday could be the night when they use their past experiences to their advantage and help Mauricio Pochettino’s side take a foothold in the tie.

Son has featured six times for Dortmund in the past and Tottenham will be hoping he adds to the five goals he has against them to date.

Son played a vital role in Hamburg’s league double over Dortmund back in the 2012/2013 season, scoring twice in a 3-2 win and again netting a brace in a 4-1 victory later in the campaign.

He would then move on to Bayer Leverkusen, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory against Dortmund shortly after his arrival.

In short, Son seemingly loves to play against Dortmund so he will surely have a big role to play when Tottenham come to town.

As for Wimmer, his Bundesliga experience is considerably less but he tasted victory on the only occasion he has faced Dortmund to date, playing the whole match as Cologne ran out 2-1 winners last season.

Wimmer has been brilliant for Tottenham in Jan Vertonghen’s absence but he will have to be at his best to keep Dortmund’s forward-line at bay, while Son could write himself into Spurs folklore if he puts in another great performance against Thomas Tuchel’s men.
