Rafa Benitez was keen on signing Tim Krul while at Napoli.
HITC reported last night that Newcastle United are preparing to make an offer to Rafa Benitez to take over from Steve McClaren as boss.
The club are stuck in the relegation zone and look listless under their current boss, with a fresh approach widely considered to be required.
Benitez has experience managing in the Premier League with Liverpool and Chelsea, and has good knowledge of the players in the division.
One Newcastle United player he is reported to particularly admire is injured goalkeeper Tim Krul.
The Mirror reported in 2013 that Krul was considered to be Rafa Benitez's top transfer target at Napoli, knowing Pepe Reina was unwilling to sign permanently from Liverpool.
Newcastle resisted the overtures from the Serie A side, and Krul did not kick up a fuss, going onto earn a spot in the Dutch squad at the World Cup months later.
Improbably he remains at the club despite being highly coveted, but likely to Benitez's frustration, he will not get to use the goalkeeper if he takes the job at St. James' Park.
Krul suffered a serious knee injury earlier in the season while on international duty for Holland, and the Toon have been playing Rob Elliott in goal, with Karl Darlow failing to seize his chance to impress.
