Sunderland have today confirmed on their official website that free agent defender Emmanuel Eboue has signed a contract until the end of the season.
The Black Cats are fighting against relegation, and after a 1-1 draw with Southampton last weekend, Sam Allardyce's men are now a point clear of the bottom three.
Still, Allardyce has been looking for ways to strengthen his side even after signing the likes of Lamine Kone, Jan Kirchhoff and Wahbi Khazri in January, and took former Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue on trial last month.
The Ivorian defender, 32, has been a free agent since leaving Galatasaray at the end of last season, and is now back in the Premier League after seemingly impressing during his trial spell on Wearside.
Sunderland confirmed earlier today that Eboue has signed a deal until the end of the season, offering an experienced option in a position where the Black Cats have had problems.
Adam Matthews has been sent out on loan to Bristol City having struggled since his move from Celtic last summer, whilst Billy Jones has disappointed in patches this season. Tottenham loanee DeAndre Yedlin has been hit-and-miss too, meaning Eboue has a great chance of playing if he's fit enough.
Fans have been reacting on Twitter ever since the deal was confirmed, and believe that there could be a huge impact on Yedlin, either by offering him valuable experience, or by supplanting him from the Sunderland team.
Supporters believe that Eboue's experience and character will help Sunderland, and are hopeful that he can hit the ground running ahead of the next game against rivals Newcastle United.
Here are some of the reactions from Sunderland fans on Twitter after Eboue put pen-to-paper this afternoon...
So we signed eboue, can't be any worse than Jones.— Liam Kennedy (@KennaSAFC) March 9, 2016
Pleased with Eboue. Gotta be better than Jones and Yedlin. Just really frustrating that we got rid of Revelliere really. #SAFC— Glen (@GCardy4) March 9, 2016
Good job #safc on signing Emmanuel Eboue! Great right back possibility— S.A. (@snazzy_smounts) March 9, 2016
Eboue could genuinely be a massive boost for us. Huge character and can help yedlin with his experience— Reece Benson (@Reece_Benson) March 9, 2016
Eboue has to be better then Jones and hopefully better then yedlin— Connor Swainston (@swainyFTM) March 9, 2016
Can see Eboue becoming a cult hero at the very best, worst case scenario he helps relegate us.— Joseph Tilbury (@j_m_tilbury) March 9, 2016
