Steve Nicol jokingly suggests Paolo Di Canio take charge of Newcastle

Newcastle are reportedly looking to replace Steve McClaren as head coach.

Speaking to ESPN FC, Steve Nicol has suggested that Paolo Di Canio takes charge of Newcastle, as he is the fiery character who could bring a spark to St James’ Park.

When discussing potential managerial targets for Newcastle, Nicol said: “Where’s Paolo Di Canio when you need him? Because it’s going to have to be someone like that. There’s going to have to be a spark.”

Nicol was jokingly suggesting Di Canio as a contender for the Newcastle job, but his point is a sound one.

The Italian will likely never take charge of the Magpies, having spent a 13 game spell with Sunderland in 2013, but his attitude and temperament is the kind that the Magpies need.

Steve McClaren looks completely out of his depth, and he seems to have no ability to motivate his team.

He looks just as dour as his players, and Newcastle need a manager who can kickstart the team to start performing - as results are vital right now.

A man manager is needed, and someone with Di Canio’s passion would suit the club well.

He does not have to be a long-term appointment, but to secure Premier League survival, a manager like Di Canio would be the perfect option for the last weeks of the season.
