The Owls remain in the play-offs following a 0-0 draw at promotion rivals Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Owls, who were without top scorer Fernando Forestieri for the third time in four matches, hadn't won in four ahead of their visit to the Amex Stadium, and knew that any sort of slip-up could be punished by the three teams directly below them in the table.
But despite extending their winless run to five, Wednesday were impressive against tough opponents, who'd scored 10 goals in their previous three home outings.
And, thanks to a late fightback from Bolton Wanderers at home to Ipswich Town, Carlos Carvalhal's men ended the evening in sixth, with Cardiff and Birmingham both slipping to defeats against bottom-half sides.
Barry Bannan was arguably the Owls' best player on the night, while stand-in full-backs Joe Bennett and Liam Palmer continued to stake their claim for regular places with another clean sheet against higher-ranked opponents.
All three players took to Twitter after the match, expressing praise for their teammates and fans alike, 1500 of whom had made the 450-mile round trip on a school night.
