James Milner is facing a race against time to be fit for Thursday's Europa League tie due to illness.

Liverpool have been dealt a major blow ahead of their Europa League last-16 first leg against Manchester United on Thursday with James Milner a major doubt for the clash, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds face the Red Devils in the Europe for the first time at Anfield tomorrow in what is sure to be an emotional and fiesty affair on Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp's side may have to face their rivals without the services of their vice-captain, however, as the Echo reports that Milner missed training on Wednesday with a virus.

The England international was reportedly give medication and sent home from the club's Melwood training ground, but Klopp will wait until Thursday morning to make a final decision on the midfielder.

Milner was in line to start the European clash as he picked up a one-match domestic suspension after being sent off for two bookable offences against Crystal Palace at the weekend, meaning that he will miss the Premier League trip to Southampton on 20 March.

However, there is now a big question mark over his inclusion as Klopp may be forced to change his plans for the clash with Louis van Gaal's side.

However, there is some good news for Liverpool supporters as Daniel Sturridge is pushing for a recall to the starting line-up after being rested for the last two games.
