Middlesbrough fell to a surprising defeat to Rotherham on Tuesday.

Middlesbrough were defeated 1-0 by Rotherham on Tuesday evening, dealing a blow to their automatic promotion hopes.

They remain in second place, but Burnley’s victory extended their lead at the top of the table, and Hull know they can go equal with Boro if they win their game in hand.

It was another poor defeat for Boro, who have made a series of mistakes this season, but to lose to a team in the bottom three is truly poor.

Lee Frecklington scored with just minutes remaining of the game, and Rotherham ended the game with 10 men after Greg Halford was sent off for two yellow cards.

Boro dominated the game, managing 13 shots to Rotherham’s seven, and controlling 57.3% of possession.

However, they just could not put the ball in the back of the net, mostly down to Lee Camp’s goalkeeping performance, and the woodwork from a Gaston Ramirez shot.

Still, Middlesbrough fans did not take too kindly to the performance from Dave Nugent upfront, having seen the striker miss a host of chances.

He was replaced after 75 minutes by Jordan Rhodes - who for some reason was on the substitutes bench - and would not have been pleased by his performance.

Following the game, Boro fans took to Twitter to react to the performance of misfiring striker Nugent.
