The Belgian has been instrumental in helping Mauricio Pochettino's side move into title contention.
The 27-year-old has been sensational for Spurs this term. No team has conceded fewer goals than Mauricio Pochettino's side this season, and considering the Belgian has started every single game for the club in the league since his summer move, it is safe to assume that he has been a key reason behind their success.
And having watched Alderweireld's former club Southampton enjoy a similar level of success defensively last season, Le Tissier is in no doubt as to who has been the division's most important player this term.
"I'm going with somebody who has been magnificent and transformed the Tottenham defence from their weakness to the best in the Premier League - Toby Alderweireld," he told Sky Sports when asked who his Player of the Year is.
"The improvement has been incredible and it's no coincidence that Southampton had the second best defence in the Premier League last season. Of all the players Southampton lost over recent years he was the one I was most gutted about. He's a bit of throwback defender, fearless in putting himself on the line, his positional play is brilliant and he's also very versatile."
And it has not just been defensively that Alderweireld has proved useful to his team this season. He has contributed two assists and scored three goals, including the initial equaliser in Saturday's draw with Arsenal in the North London derby.
That form has helped Pochettino's men establish themselves as Leicester City's closest challengers for the title. With nine games to go, Spurs are just five points adrift of the Foxes.
And with none of the other teams in the top five still to play in their remaining games, Tottenham certainly have a good chance of catching Claudio Ranieri's men, but will need their star players, such as Alderweireld, to maintain their excellent form if they are to do it.
