The Premier League side looking nervously at Newcastle's McClaren decision

Newcastle United appointing Nigel Pearson would be an unwanted distraction for Leicester City.

Newcastle are on a downwards spiral under Steve McClaren and former striker wrote in his weekly blog for Coral that the club appear doomed for relegation.

The Guardian report that McClaren is expected to be fired this week, and former Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson is on the list of contenders to replace him.

With Newcastle set to face Leicester City at the King Power Stadium next Monday night, this would be a particularly unwanted distraction for the league leaders.

No Leicester fan could surely begrudge Pearson the chance to return to top flight management, but the timing is not great for the Foxes.

Pearson was the man who led the club to promotion and helped them survive in the Premier League last season against the odds, and his work laid the foundations for the club's even more unlikely title challenge next season.

Next weekend Tottenham and Arsenal have a chance to put the pressure on Leicester by playing earlier, but facing a Steve McClaren led Newcastle would seem like easy pickings for the Foxes at present going off current form.

If it is Pearson leading the team out, the complexion of that changes entirely. The same would be so if David Moyes or Brendan Rodgers for instance were Newcastle managers next Monday, but Pearson would be an extra distraction for Leicester.

It would be bittersweet for Pearson if he were to play a part in denying Leicester the title, and the Foxes must surely be looking nervously at Newcastle's decision and hoping their former boss does not come back to haunt them.
