Steve Nicol’s response when asked if knocking Manchester United out of Europe will make Liverpool’s season a success

Liverpool take on Manchester United in the Europa League this week.

Speaking to ESPN FC, Steve Nicol has responded when asked if Liverpool’s season will be a success if the Reds knock Manchester United out of the Europa League.

Nicol said: “No. It has not been fun to watch. Just because you’ve beaten Manchester United in a tournament, your season doesn’t become successful.”

Liverpool take on United in the Europa League, in what is a massive game for both clubs.

Given that neither side look likely to finish in the top four this season, winning the Europa League could be the only way that Champions League qualification is secured.

Both teams have struggled this season, and it is hard to say that either of them deserve a spot in the Champions League next season, and even the team that wins still has tough games to go before potentially winning the Europa League.

Still, success in that competition would bring silverware and Champions League qualification to the club, but Nicol does not believe that victory for Liverpool would make their season successful.

He has criticised the club for the poor football they have been playing all season, and has claimed that simply knocking United out of the Europa League will not make their season a good one.

Liverpool need to push on in the final weeks of the season, ensuring that they finish as high as they can in the Premier League as well as winning the Europa League.
