Speaking to France Football, Samuel Umtiti has discussed his future, following reports linking him with a move to Newcastle United this summer.
When asked whether he has any plans to leave Lyon, Umtiti said: “At Lyon I went through all the stages [youth team to first-team]! I am proud to have done all that. Playing an entire career at the same club has become very rare. I rule out nothing. But if, after a while, I see the need to do something different, I ask myself the question.”
Umtiti is certainly not ruling out a move away from Lyon, just days after the Chronicle has claimed that Newcastle want to sign him this summer.
The report indicates that the Tyneside club are already making moves to sign the 22-year-old centre-back this summer, even though their Premier League status hangs in the balance.
They have already vocalised their interest to Umtiti’s agent, but have yet to make a formal approach for his services.
Umtiti is extremely highly rated, and signing him would be a real coup for the Magpies given his talents, and with some of Europe’s biggest clubs said to have been tracking him for a number of years.
He has been capped at every level for France up to Under-21, and it is expected that he makes his senior debut before too long.
Umtiti has spent his entire career with Lyon, and has admitted that playing for only one club has become a rare occurrence in modern football.
That is something that he is refusing to rule out, but the chance of a move to the Premier League could be too much for Umtiti to turn down this summer.
