Aston Villa are looking to get former players involved to arrest their slide.
Paul Merson has told TalkSPORT’s Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast that Aston Villa should look at getting Andy Townsend involved, to stop their slide.
Townsend used to play for Villa, and has been working as a pundit since retiring from the game.
Merson has been impressed by the former Republic of Ireland international’s knowledge, and he feels that Villa should bring him into the club, in some capacity.
“People like Andy Townsend should be in the game,” he said. “I don’t think they would go far wrong with getting Townsend involved.”
Villa’s board has been criticised for showing a lack of football knowledge this season, as they have shown no signs that they know how to stop the club falling out of the Premier League.
The club have suggested that they will be looking to get former players involved now, however, as they aim to change the direction that the club is heading in.
So far none of the changes that Villa's board have made change have sparked Villa into life, and they have been dire all season.
The Claret and Blues have won just three league matches all season, and they currently are nine points adrift of safety.
Villa have shown a distinct lack of fight in their matches, and they look destined to be playing Championship football next season.
