Micky Gray has joked on the Alan Brazil Sports’ Breakfast Show on TalkSPORT on the morning of the 8th March that he hopes Steve McClaren keeps his job at Newcastle United, as he might take them down.
Gray, who used to play for Sunderland, is obviously hoping that his former side finish above the drop zone, at the expense of their North East rivals.
And their best chance of doing so, could be if Newcastle do keep hold of McClaren, according to Gray.
“I hope he keeps his job, he might take them down,” Gray laughed. “Sorry, that was my Sunderland head speaking. He doesn’t seem to be getting the best out of his players, and when the hierarchy can see that there’s only going to be one outcome.
“Getting a fresh face might be the right thing to do.”
McClaren is believed to be on his last legs at Newcastle, with rumours about his exit circling all week.
At the moment the former England boss remains in charge at St. James’ Park, but there is severe pressure on him.
Newcastle have lost nine of their last 12 matches in all competitions, and they have slipped down to 19th place in the Premier League table.
The Magpies are still only one point from safety, but they have not shown much improvements in recent weeks, and there is real fear that they could be relegated.
