Sunderland's Under-21 side fended off Everton with a 3-2 win at the Stadium of Light on Monday evening - and winger Rees Greenwood earned great praise.
Two goals from Swedish international Ola Toivonen and a strike from defender Tom Beadling won it for the Black Cats, with Tom Robson and Kieran Dowell finding the net for Everton.
Sunderland's starting XI featured first-team players Toivonen and Sebastian Larsson, as well as promising youngsters like Jordan Pickford and Mikael Mandron, but it was another prospect who stole the show in Rees Greenwood.
Greenwood, 20, was born in nearby Winlaton and joined Sunderland when he was just eight, and has been making way up through the club's youth system over the last few years.
Now a regular for Sunderland's Under-21's, the winger has been earning praise for his performances - and that was again the case as he took on Everton.
After the final whistle, former Sunderland full back Micky Gray took to Twitter to state that he was 'very impressed' with Greenwood, stating that the future is bright on Wearside.
Gray also thinks that Greenwood is more polished than fellow young winger Duncan Watmore, who has been playing in the Sunderland first team this season - and believes Greenwood deserves a chance, even though Sunderland are fighting against relegation.
