Ozil and Payet have been compared to each other throughout the campaign so far, as they are both regarded as two of the finest attacking midfielders in England.
Arsenal fans have generally claimed that Ozil is the better player, while West Ham supporters argue that Payet is better.
And Gunners legend Wright seems to be on the side of the Hammers followers, as he feels that Ozil has fallen short of the standards set by Payet this term.
“I fancied Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil to be having the sort of season Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Dimitri Payet have enjoyed,” he said.
“I certainly didn’t envisage them turning in some of the pitiful performances we’ve seen.”
Ozil is very close to breaking the Premier League assists record this term, after setting up 18 goals for his teammates so far.
However, the German international has arguably not stepped up to the plate in Arsenal’s most important matches.
Payet, meanwhile, has been the driving force behind West Ham’s push for the top four.
The Marseille midfielder has been in sensational form, and he has now scored eight goals and racked up seven assists in his first 22 Premier League appearances.
