Tottenham Hotspur have some fine defensive options now, suggesting the Argentine could have played his last game for the club.
When Federico Fazio left Tottenham Hotspur on loan earlier this season it came as no big surprise to their fans.
After all, the Argentine had played just once for Spurs all season, looking shaky in a Capital One Cup clash with Arsenal back in September. But while he struggles for game-time at loan club Sevilla, the emergence of Kevin Wimmer at White Hart Lane may have ensured Fazio has absolutely no chance of forcing his way back into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans next season.
When Fazio first returned to La Liga, Wimmer was something of an unknown quantity having featured sporadically in cup competitions, but Jan Vertonghen’s injury has allowed the Austrian to shine and he is looking better by the week.
Fazio’s long-term future at Tottenham was always uncertain such was his fall from grace under Pochettino, but will Wimmer’s brilliance prove to be the final nail in the proverbial coffin?
With Cameron Carter-Vickers also waiting in the wings the simple fact is Fazio is no longer needed at White Hart Lane.
If Wimmer had flopped alongside Toby Alderweireld then the 28-year-old may have seen a glimmer of hope. But he did the opposite, suggesting that Fazio has played his last game for Tottenham despite his likely return in the summer.
