Sutton said: “I think Martinez is becoming a joke and an embarrassment, because after every game he blames everybody other than himself. I just don’t understand what he’s doing.”
Martinez failures as a coach are starting to catch up with him at Goodison Park, with the Toffees sitting in mid-table with a squad that should be pushing for the top six.
Everton own a number of the best young players in European football, with Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley, Gerard Deulofeu and John Stones all excellent.
Whilst the attacking players continue to look good, aided by Martinez’s good work n the final third, his failures as a defensive coach continue to cost the side.
John Stones seems to be getting worse under his tutelage, and as a team, Everton constantly shoot themselves in the foot.
The loss to West Ham on Saturday was the latest, and best, example.
Leading 2-0, with a penalty to take, Everton contrived to lose 3-2 in injury time, conceding three goals in the last 25 minutes to the Hammers. They were down to 10 men, but that is not a good excuse, especially given that all three goals came from questionable defending.
Sutton is extremely critical of Martinez, calling him a joke and embarrassment, and this is a view which many Everton fans seem to be coming round to now.
