Chris Sutton says Newcastle should appoint Harry Redknapp

Newcastle United should appoint Harry Redknapp as their head coach, suggests Chris Sutton.

Former Norwich City and Celtic striker Chris Sutton suggested on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5 live Sport on Monday evening (March 7) that Newcastle United should appoint Harry Redknapp as their new head coach.

Sutton claimed that if Steve McClaren remains in charge of Newcastle until the end of the season, then the Magpies will get relegated to the Championship.

“If you want a quick fix, maybe someone like Harry Redknapp could go in and give them a kick up the backside,” said the Englishman. “The simple fact is if they carry on with McClaren, they look like they are doomed.”

McClaren does not seem to have any idea on how to sort out the current mess, and it would not come as a surprise to anyone if Newcastle sack him.

But would Redknapp be the right replacement?

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers boss knows the Premier League inside out, but is he the man to guide Newcastle to safety?

While Redknapp is a strong character and can make the Newcastle players more determined, he is probably not the man who can sort out the team’s defensive frailties and lack of goals upfront.
