78 touches; eight duels won: Under-fire Liverpool star Alberto Moreno impressed against Palace

Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno has been under pressure this season.

Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno had one of his best games in months as his side produced a stunning comeback to defeat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park at the weekend.

The Reds were a goal behind and down to 10 men heading into the final 20 minutes, yet goals from Roberto Firmino and Christian Benteke saw Jurgen Klopp’s men pull off an unlikely win.

Benteke, a man very much on the periphery of the first-team, will rightfully earn the plaudits after coming on, winning a 94th-minute penalty and then duly dispatching from 12 yards to earn his side all three points.

But there were plenty of other decent performers out there for the Reds, with the under-fire Moreno in particular putting in a real shift and providing a performance worthy of the shirt.

As shown by the table provided by Opta, the Spanish full-back contributed greatly over the 90 minutes.

Moreno posted an impressive eight defensive duels won, five ball recoveries, four tackles, four interceptions and two effective clearances as he was tested by Palace’s dangerous wing play.

The former Sevilla man has been heavily criticised this season, largely as a result of being neglectful towards his defending and finding himself way out of position when pushing up to join the attack.

But Moreno was more defensive-minded and switched on against Palace, especially during the latter stages when his side were down to 10 men and vulnerable to being hit on the counter.

With Jon Flanagan pushing for a regular role at left-back, Moreno knows he must impress when given the opportunity and Klopp will be pleased with his application to the task in hand at Selhurst Park.
