There are several free agents on the market right now - but Newcastle should steer well clear of some...
But, for that reason, Benitez isn't the man for Newcastle right now. When has Rafa ever been famous for keeping a team up? And how exactly will a man used to Champions League football adapt to the Championship?
Benitez is used to spending huge sums of money and isn't all that effective when those funds aren't given to him. That isn't exactly a recipe for success at St James' Park - despite the fact the Spaniard is a good manager who, at another time, would have been a dream coup for the Magpies.
An absolute no go. Harry Redknapp has been consigned to the past in recent months, demonstrating his lack of knowledge of the modern game as a pundit. He showed his ineptitude at QPR and he wouldn't keep Newcastle up, nor would he have the bottle to take them back up.
A very similar man to Redknapp, Tim Sherwood is all talk. Granted, he would still be a better option - he somehow took Aston Villa to a cup final last season and now has experience of managing at a club where off-field incompetence becomes very costly.
But Sherwood has no tactics, no in-game management and looked so out of his depth at Aston Villa that he may have relegated them even had everything been rosy off the pitch at Villa Park.
