Sunderland fans react on Twitter after Adam Matthews joins Bristol City

Sunderland Gates

Sunderland signed Adam Matthews from Celtic last summer.

Sunderland supporters have expressed their disappointment that Adam Matthews transfer from Celtic has not worked out, after the full-back joined Bristol City on loan until the end of the season today.

Matthews moved to Sunderland from the Bhoys last summer, but he failed to break into Sam Allardyce’s first-team.

The 24-year-old made just two appearances for the Black Cats, way back in August, and despite Sunderland’s persistent defensive struggles Allardyce has never used the full-back.

Sunderland’s supporters never really got the chance to assess Matthews’ quality, and they do not seem particularly bothered about his departure.

Mathews seemingly has little future at the Stadium of Light, but he could make a name for himself at Bristol City.

The Robins have improved of late, but they are still not totally assured of their Championship status for next season.

Lee Johnson’s side are currently stationed in 20th place and they are only five points above the drop zone.

Matthews could make his debut for City in their next match against Wolverhampton Wanderers tomorrow evening.
