Writing on his personal blog, Richard Keys has urged West Ham fans to understand that Slaven Bilic would not be enjoying this current success if it was not for Sam Allardyce’s spell at the Boleyn Ground.
Keys claimed: “On the subject of West Ham. Let's keep this simple. I say again, I hope Bilic wins the FA Cup. I like his attitude towards the competition AND he's master-minded a terrific season so far. But - I do wish that a small minded minority of West Ham fans would understand that Bilic wouldn't have the club he's got to manage right now had it not been for Sam Allardyce. You were dead in the water when Allardyce picked the club up. He got you up - kept you up - twice - and left a fantastic platform for Bilic to work from.”
Keys does make a valid point, as Bilic has built a successful side after inheriting an established Premier League team from Allardyce.
West Ham’s fans may not have been overly keen on Allardyce, as his style of play was not to their liking, but you would be hard pressed to find someone who denies his impact at the Boleyn Ground.
He won promotion from the Championship, and established the Hammers as a top flight team, and he brought in many of the players who are key figures in Bilic’s team this season.
His impact will be remembered fondly, but Bilic has rightfully taken all of the praise, as he has far exceeded any expectations set on him at the start of the season.
They are one point off the top four, with Champions League football within their grasp, and they are playing some of the most exciting football in the league.
West Ham are only going to keep improving with their move to the Olympic Stadium this summer, and with Bilic at the helm, there is no predicting just how good the Hammers can become in the coming years.
