Edgar Davids said on the Matchday Live with Fletch & Sav show on BT Sport 1 on Saturday morning (March 5, broadcast from 10am) that Tottenham Hotspur should be careful about how they spend in the coming years.
The former Tottenham midfielder suggested that if the North London outfit spend badly, then they could end up like Leeds United.
“That’s hard to say,” said Davids when asked whether Tottenham can sustain their current success in the long run.
“The thing is if you look at it from a long-term perspective, if they go on to be champions, what happens next?
“Because they have to spend regardless. Because you don’t think that the fans are going to think, 'Okay this one time'. They would want it back to back.
“Then you have to spend, and when you spend three years in a row, you don’t spend well, it can go really like Leeds. That’s the difference and that’s the danger.”
Leeds were playing Champions League football not so long ago, but now they are in the Championship.
The West Yorkshire outfit enjoyed a few great years, but eventually they failed to sustain their success.
The Whites spent more money than they should have, and they have not been in the Premier League since 2004.
It is hard to see Spurs going that way, especially as in Daniel Levy, the North London outfit have a very shrewd chairman.
Levy has shown over the years that he is very careful with money, and Spurs fans should be optimistic about the future, especially if Mauricio Pochettino’s side win the Premier League title this season.
