Newcastle are said to be close to sacking Steve McClaren.
Murphy said: “It’s worth a try [replacing McClaren]. Moyes did a great job at Everton, and obviously there’s Benitez out there as well, but Nigel Pearson and Brendan Rodgers both got out of the Championship. So if they [Newcastle] did go down, you’re not then in the summer going ‘oh, what are we going to do’. They could make a change now and still put someone in charge who could do a job next season as well.”
David Moyes and Rafa Benitez have been mentioned as potential targets for the Magpies, with their top flight and European experience making them attractive managers.
However, neither boss has ever won promotion from the Championship, and Murphy believes that Newcastle need to hire a manager who has got out of the second tier in recent history.
He has named Nigel Pearson and Brendan Rodgers as the two managers who should be looked at if McClaren is sacked.
They are both recent employees in the Premier League, but they also have both overseen promotions to the top flight.
Rodgers won promotion with Swansea, and Pearson with Leicester, and hiring them would mean that Newcastle already have a manager in place for next season if they are relegated.
There would not be a rush in the summer to hire a new manager, like there would be if Moyes or Benitez were hired, and this long-term vision is exactly what Newcastle need right now.
Rodgers and Pearson are both talented managers in their own right, and with relegation looking a real possibility, hiring either one of that duo would appear to be the wisest option.
