Newcastle United lost 3-1 to Bournemouth at St. James' Park.
The Magpies were defeated 3-1 by Bournemouth in front of their own fans, and they put in a highly disappointing performance during the match.
Newcastle were outplayed for much of the contest by the visitors, with many of the Tynesiders’ players failing to live up to expectations in a crucial match.
Shearer was fuming at his former side’s display, but he did see some positives in Shelvey’s performance.
"I expected so much more in a must-win game," he said.
"Bournemouth arrived at St James’ Park knowing they were still in a relegation fight — and rolled their sleeves up.
"They came with an attitude that they were simply not going to be beaten, not going to go down. They put their bodies on the line with every single player pulling in the same direction.
"Not so their opponents. I think in Newcastle’s side only midfielder Jonjo Shelvey can escape criticism."
Shelvey was only brought to Newcastle from Swansea City in January, but he has quickly proven his class at St. James’ Park.
The England international midfielder has played a key role ever since making the switch to Steve McClaren’s side, and he was handed the captain’s armband for their match against Bournemouth.
Shelvey was visibly seen protesting at some of his teammates’ display on the pitch, but he was not able to spark them into life.
Newcastle’s loss to Bournemouth has left them in 19th place in the Premier League table, and they have now lost nine of their last 12 matches.
