According to The Sun, Southampton’s Fraser Forster is a summer transfer target for Liverpool.
The report claims that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be given a £100 million spending budget, and the German aims to buy a British goalkeeper, with Forster and Stoke City’s Jack Butland listed as targets.
The Southampton number one spent a good chunk of this season out on the injury table but since coming back in to the side over the New Year, the Saints have shored up their defence.
The ex-Celtic ace is highly-rated on the South Coast, and has kept six clean sheets in his last nine Premier League games including blanks both at Manchester United and Arsenal.
Liverpool number one Simon Mignolet hasn’t had such an influence on his side, where in contrast a number of supporters are growing increasingly tired of the Belgian’s error-strewn displays.
The former Sunderland man has so far had the backing of Klopp, yet there is no doubt that a cloud hangs over his future at Anfield with Forster and Butland both regarded as clear improvements.
Southampton have seen a number of players depart the club for Liverpool in recent seasons, with Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Nathaniel Clyne all involved in the Reds’ midweek win over Manchester City.
But Forster would arguably be the best purchase of the lot from St. Mary’s, such is his superb ability and the desperate need for a reliable goalkeeper who has the backing of the entire Liverpool support.
