Report: Newcastle to make McClaren decision today; Ashley in role change

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren is on thin ice.

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle United will make a decision whether to sack head coach Steve McClaren today as owner Mike Ashley takes a more leading role.

The report claims that Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley will discuss McClaren’s future today after the Magpies were left licking their wounds following another disappointing defeat.

McClaren was long recognised as Ashley’s ideal choice of manager for Newcastle, and the former Middlesbrough boss joined the club last summer after receiving his marching orders from Derby County.

But in spite of a heavy outlay on transfers in both the summer and January, McClaren has struggled at St. James’ Park and with ten Premier League games to go ,the club find themselves in 19th position and in real trouble.

The latest 3-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth means Newcastle are now in a group of four battling to stay up, with Aston Villa looking doomed while Sunderland in contrast are showing signs of improvement.

The supporters aren’t happy and urged the club to sack McClaren during Saturday’s defeat, and they may end up getting their wish as Charnely and Ashley seek a drastic change in fortunes.

As told by the Northern Echo, Ashley in particular is now looking to take on a more hands-on role in order to help turn Newcastle’s fortunes around but he is said to be remain reluctant to sack McClaren without having a replacement ready to step in for the final ten matches.

Rafa Benitz, Brendan Rodgers and Nigel Pearson are all listed as potential candidates while Harry Redknapp on a short-term deal is also highlighted as a potential possibility.
