Dive of the season: Pundits have their say on Liverpool’s winning penalty

Liverpool defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

Liverpool produced one of the best comebacks of the current Premier League season as they came from 1-0 down and a man less to score two late goals and defeat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

The Reds found themselves in a whole heap of trouble, trailing to Joe Ledley’s second-half strike and playing with 10 men after James Milner received his marching orders for two bookable offences.

Yet Jurgen Klopp’s men rallied, played the better football in the latter stages and won the game as first Roberto Firmino brought them level before Christian Benteke scored a 94th-minute penalty.

The winning goal, however, was not without controversy and it was a decision hotly disputed by the pundits.

Benteke was adjudged to have been fouled by Damien Delaney’s sliding tackle, and while contact was visible many pundits and observers felt the striker made a meal of it and conned the referee into giving a penalty.

The Belgium international coolly picked himself up and slotted in from 12 yards, earning Liverpool victory with the last kick of the game and condemning Palace to another league match without a win.

The victory takes the Reds up to seventh position in the table, six points off Manchester City and the top four.

With Klopp’s side finding form and still in both the Europa League and the race for a top four spot, the Merseyside club’s season is far from over.
