Sheffield Wednesday were defeated 1-0 at home by Rotherham United.
The Owls headed into their clash with Neil Warnock’s Rotherham as clear favourites yet a Matt Derbyshire goal followed by some staunch defending left the hosts frustrated.
Talking about the encounter after the game, Carvalhal tried to pick out the positives and found one in the introduction of Joao who made a real difference to Wednesday’s attack in the second period.
“He created chances, he is in good shape and he is better now than he was in the last two months. It is good for us that he comes with new energy,” Carvalhal said of his striker.
”In the first half we were not with the quality that we usually play but in the second half when we put Lucas on, it gave more freedom to Gary Hooper behind Lucas and Atdhe Nuhiu.”
“We started pressing the opponents, we created chances but we must put the ball inside the net.”
Wednesday struggled to make any sort of impact during a tepid first half and they found themselves trailing after Derbyshire took advantage of some rather hazardous home defending.
Joao, introduced at the interval, allowed the likes of Gary Hooper and Atdhe Nuhiu to find space more regularly and the hosts certainly came back in to it in the latter stages.
The Portuguese youngster has a bright future at Hillsborough, and he showed what he could do against the Millers with an impressive four shots and three key passes.
Joao has made 31 Championship appearances this season, scoring six goals.
The defeat leaves the Owls hanging on to the final play-off position on goal-difference, although having played a game extra on top-six rivals Birmingham City and Ipswich Town.
