Sunderland fans react unanimously on Twitter to Jan Kirchhoff's performance against Southampton

Sunderland supporters raved about Jan Kirchhoff's display against Southampton.

Sunderland drew 1-1 away at Southampton on Saturday afternoon, but came so close to all three points before conceding an injury-time equaliser.

The Black Cats, who drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace in midweek, took the lead thanks to a late Jermain Defoe strike following Jose Fonte's red card, but dropped two points in the final seconds.

Virgil van Dijk swooped to hand the Saints a share of the spoils, but the draw means Sam Allardyce's Sunderland sit one point clear of the relegation zone.

During and after the game, fans took to Twitter to give their reactions to the performance, and particularly focused on the display from January signing Jan Kirchhoff.

The German, 25, left Bayern Munich for Sunderland in January having struggled for first-team football, and he endured a nightmare debut with a terrible display against Tottenham.

However, the centre back-turned-defensive midfielder has adjusted to life in the Premier League, and has been serving up some fine performance in recent matches.

Against Southampton, Kirchhoff not only protected the Sunderland back four - Southampton only scored when he was substituted in the dying embers of the match - but also dictated play from deep for the Black Cats in an outstanding performances.

Sunderland fans took to Twitter to rave about Kirchhoff's performance, suggesting he is one of the club's finest bargains in recent memory, with supporters clearly impressed with how the 6ft 5in German is performing in England.
