Paul Merson names the Championship manager Aston Villa should appoint

Paul Merson suggests that Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy would be good for Aston Villa.

Paul Merson has suggested in The Daily Star that Aston Villa should appoint Mick McCarthy as their manager.

McCarthy is in charge of Ipswich Town at the moment and has a contract until June 2018.

Villa are at the foot of the Premier League table at the moment and are in real danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

Merson believes that the Villans should look to appoint McCarthy as their manager to take them out of the Championship and back to the Premier League.

“They need to get Mick McCarthy on the phone, he is the manager they need to get them out of that league,” the former Villa attacker wrote in The Daily Star.

“They should offer him whatever he wants to manage Aston Villa. People might say he doesn’t play the Villa way but the Villa way is to get back up.”

McCarthy knows the Championship inside out, and he is doing a good job at Ipswich. Would the former Republic of Ireland international defender be open to taking charge of Villa?

Ipswich are doing relatively well at the moment, and could clinch a playoff spot and perhaps even get promoted from the Championship at the end of the season. Why would McCarthy leave Portman Road and move to Villa Park?
