Merson says Wenger sees Arsenal winger as "easy option" to substitute

Former Arsenal player Paul Merson says that Arsene Wenger finds it easier to replace Joel Campbell than other wingers at the Gunners.

Paul Merson has suggested on Gillette Soccer Saturday, broadcast on March 5 at 12.15pm, that Joel Campbell has been harshly treated in recent weeks.

In the absence of Alexis Sanchez, Campbell was thrust into first-team action and either side of the turn of the year, he produced several impressive performances for Arsenal as they put together a run of seven wins and one defeat in 10 games.

Since Sanchez returned, though, Campbell has been used sparingly, but on Wednesday night, he took advantage of a rare start by opening the scoring for Arsenal against Swansea City.

However, he was replaced on 64 minutes and Arsenal went on to lose the game, and although he came out of the midweek fixture with credit, he was back on the bench for the North London derby with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Costa Rican international would only be introduced as a last-minute substitute, adding to Merson's belief that the attacker is regarded as an "easy option" to replace either in the team or on the bench.

Merson said: "He is the easy option. At least he shows something, he shows enthusiasm and makes runs. Against Swansea, he made a run that no-one else did and it was a really good finish.

"You should keep him on because he makes runs and his enthusiasm carries the fans. The fans aren't silly and then they see Wenger take him off."

Campbell has completed 90 minutes on just four occasions in all competitions this season.
