HITC Sport understands that the Spaniard will be offered fresh terms

Middlesbrough are set to open contract talks with star defender Daniel Ayala with interest mounting from a host of clubs, including near neighbours Newcastle United and Sunderland, HITC Sport understands.

The 25-year-old joined Boro from Norwich in 2014, and he has established himself as one of the best central defenders outside the Premier League.

Ayala has just over 12 months left on his current deal and Boro are now anxious to tie down the former Liverpool stopper to fresh terms.

As well as Newcastle and Sunderland, West Ham United and Leicester City are also among the clubs taking a keen interest, while it is also understood a number of sides back in his native Spain are also keen including Sevilla - the club he began his footballing career with.

Ayala is currently sidelined with an ankle injury he picked up against Blackburn Rovers last month.
