Paul Merson explains why he's pleased for Arsenal... because of Tottenham's success

Emirates Stadium 3

Let's see how the former Arsenal midfielder explains this one!

Paul Merson believes Tottenham Hotspur's success is good for Arsenal as it keeps the pressure on the players and board, according to Sky Sports.

Tottenham find themselves in unfamiliar territory in March, sitting above their north London rivals in the Premier League and having a very realistic chance of winning the title.

But, according to the pundit, that success could spur Arsenal on.

Merson told the Fantasy Football podcast: "I think it is great watching the way Spurs play at the moment and I think it is great for Arsenal as well, as it puts a lot of pressure on them, the board and everyone else as Tottenham are up there.

"If they were not up there, then it would be like it does not matter, it is Arsenal again - but this time the pressure is on and fair play to them."

So, will Spurs' rise help the Gunners?

Based on this season so far, you'd have to argue the opposite. Arsenal are suffering their usual March collapse but will the fact Tottenham are up there really change anything?

Fans will demand more at the Emirates Stadium but Arsene Wenger will simply claim criticism is unfair and that, actually, he's doing a great job. The Arsenal board will listen to him and the north London side's failure will continue.

Tottenham have put the pressure on the Gunners and, right now, Arsenal just aren't responding. Saturday is their chance to change that, however.
