Paul Merson discusses the new challenge facing Everton, after Farhad Moshiri's investment

Everton have just received new investment and are expected to spend big in the summer.

Paul Merson has told the Fantasy Football Podcast that Everton face a new challenge, now that they have financial backing

Farhad Moshiri has bought just under 50% of the club, and he is expected to invest huge sums into the club.

The Toffees already have plans to offer new contracts to sum of their key players - including Romelu Lukaku, John Stones and Ross Barkley (Guardian).

And Martinez’s side are also expected to bring in some high-profile players, as they look to gatecrash the top four.

Everton fans are, understandably, optimistic for the future - but Merson believes that the club face a new challenge now.

"Hopefully it’ll be a big deal. But if you get the money, you have to get the players there," the former Arsenal midfielder said.

"Everyone gives good wages now. But if you’re going for a top draw players they are going to want to play in the Champions League.

"For me, it’s great. Because I’ve always said ‘how has nobody every bought Everton?’"

Everton are unlikely to be able to make it into the European places this season, as they have fallen short of expectations.

The Toffees are currently in 11th place in the Premier League table, and they are eight points back from the top six.

Everton have scored frequently, but their troubles at the back have plagued their season and they now look set to finish in a mid table spot.
