David Gold makes an honest admission about Michail Antonio's signing

The West Ham co-owner says the 25-year-old has been 'outstanding' - but admits this kind of form wasn't expected when he was signed from Nottingham Forest.

West Ham United co-owner David Gold has made the honest admission Michail Antonio wasn't expected to perform this well when he was signed from Nottingham Forest, according to the club's official website.

Gold has heaped praise on the 'fantastic' and 'outstanding' West Ham star.

But he believes Antonio is performing above expectation, having only been brought in from Forest at the last minute in August.

Gold said in his 'From the Boardroom' column on the West Ham site: "It was fantastic to see Michail Antonio get on the scoresheet once again and he was outstanding.

"That has been the hallmark of our season - players who have come in have performed above our expectation.

"We brought Antonio in from the Championship and he is a Premier League [player]. You only have to look at the energy that he shows in every game running up and down the pitch, his work-rate and skill."

Nottingham Forest fans may have been able to tell the Hammers how good the 25-year-old was, however.

Sure, there is always a gap to bridge between the second tier and the top flight. But both Bakary Sako and Antonio have shown it's very doable.

So far ahead were both of them in the Championship last season (in terms of their goals, assists and dribbling stats) that the duo are easily good enough for the Premier League.

West Ham now know just how good Antonio is, while Forest supporters generally seem very pleased for the forward.
