Pundit Steve Claridge has told BBC Radio Five Live that Newcastle would be the best team to ever be relegated from the Premier League if they don't avoid the drop.
Newcastle lost for the fourth time in the last five games on Tuesday night, as Xherdan Shaqiri's long range strike handed Stoke City a 1-0 win at the Britannia Stadium.
The result left Newcastle second bottom of the Premier League table, but level on points with 17th placed Sunderland as the battle to stay up intensifies.
It now looks like two of Newcastle, Norwich City and Sunderland will be going down to the Championship, and Newcastle's terrible recent form - even after another spending spree in January - makes them a prime candidate for the drop.
The Magpies splashed out to land Henri Saivet, Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend in January, but so far there has been little to no improvement from Newcastle, prompting stern criticism for manager McClaren.
Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live, pundit Steve Claridge has slammed McClaren, suggesting that he has far too much quality in his squad to have Newcastle struggling in the bottom three, and even hinted that the Magpies should replace him.
Claridge also claimed that this Newcastle squad would be the best to ever be relegated from the Premier League, and certainly better than the Newcastle side which suffered relegation in 2009.
"How can Newcastle be in the bottom three?," asked Claridge. "I can't have that. With the player he's got and the quality he has there, to be in the bottom three you have got to look at the manager and say 'what are you doing here? Because you're not getting it right'. They said that last time they went down, it was the best team to ever go down. This will certainly be the best squad [to go down] if they get relegated," he added.
Do you think McClaren needs to go?
