The pundit has been discussing Newcastle's woes on the road.
And he has singled out Daryl Janmaat as the Newcastle man most in need of a change in approach on the road.
Indeed, the pundit feels Janmaat needs to be more resolute in defence - instead of constantly raiding forward.
Thompson told Sky Sports News on Thursday morning: "Players have got ability but the mental side when you go away from home. These grounds are hostile. You’ve gotta be mentally tough to go there.
"Before you go out on the pitch, you’ve got to be ready for the backlash. I don’t think enough of these Newcastle players are prepared mentally.
"There’s some mental fragility in this side. Steve McClaren’s got to get a bit of toughness in them, even if just to get a couple of draws.
"He should tell Daryl Janmaat: just stay back to get a bit of security, stop raiding down the right flank when you’re away from home."
Things appear awfully calm at Newcastle despite their Premier League future looking worryingly bleak. The Magpies are so far behind everyone else - needing almost as many wins as they've had all season to stay up - that McClaren's men actually look all but down.
Yet the hierarchy don't seem bothered. The McClaren experiment has been a failure from start to finish. Newcastle pursued a losing coach - he rejected the club, failed miserably at Derby and only then accepted the hot seat at St James' Park.
It's almost as if relegation was Newcastle's aim all along...
