Shearer praises West Ham tactics, criticises Spurs display

Upton Park

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer feels that West Ham United's new system nullified part of the threat offer by Tottenham Hotspur.

Pundit Alan Shearer has told Match of the Day, broadcast on March 2 at 10.45pm, that West Ham United's change of system was responsible for Tottenham Hotspur's below-par performance at Upton Park.

Spurs went into the London derby on Wednesday knowing that they would move to the top of the Premier League table with victory against the Hammers, but Michail Antonio's early header was enough to earn the home side all three points.

Mauricio Pochettino will be disappointed with his team's showing, but Shearer feels that his opposite number Slaven Bilic deserves credit for adopting tactics that stifled Spurs on the flanks.

Spurs had 24 hours less recovery time than West Ham after the weekend too, and Shearer felt that the North Londoners were lacking in energy.

Shearer said: "They lacked pace tonight. Lacked energy, Kane was isolated, lacked spark and their passing was slow.

"Saying that, Slaven Bilic changed the system. They did it at Southampton and got beat, but he did it tonight and it worked an absolute treat. It nullified the attacking threat of the full-backs of Spurs, which have been a big feature of their play."

While Spurs lost ground on Leicester and failed to capitalise on Arsenal succumbing at home to Swansea City, West Ham moved to within one point of the Champions League places after Manchester City's defeat at Liverpool.

West Ham are next in action when they travel to Everton on Saturday afternoon, with a point being enough to move into fifth place due to Manchester United not playing until Sunday
