The goalkeeper should have done better from the Swiss international's strike.
Newcastle United's poor season continued last night as they were defeated 1-0 by Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.
The defeat means they remain in the Premier League's relegation zone. The result was also bad news for them considering that Swansea City defeated Arsenal last night and Sunderland continue to look resurgent.
The goal on the night came from Stoke City's Swiss international star Xherdan Shaqiri. He smashed in a trademark left-foot strike from range to leave Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot with his hands on his head in disbelief.
One Newcastle United legend was not impressed with the way he conceded the goal however. Alan Shearer commented on Match of the Day last night (02/03/2016) that Elliot should have done better with the goal:
"It was a good strike from Shaqiri. Rob Elliot has been brilliant most of the season, in fact he has been their best player, but he should do better here.
"It's the middle of the goal the ball goes in. It is a good strike but again, he should save it. It starts to move a little bit but it goes in the middle of the goal.
"You can see, hands on his head that's what he thinks of it."
No doubt Elliot was disappointed with letting this strike in. There was slight movement on the ball and it was hit at some speed, so it is understandable why he ended up letting it in.
However, many will forgive him.
The Irishman, as Shearer said, has been one of the best players at Newcastle this season after stepping in for long-term absentee Tim Krul and as long as more mistakes don't follow, and potentially cost Newcastle their top-flight status, Elliot will be forgiven.
