How Sunderland have ruined Newcastle's already flawed managerial strategy

Newcastle are in real danger of going down, while Sunderland could survive at their expense.

It looks like Sunderland have spoiled the party for arch rivals Newcastle United.

Their managerial strategy was already flawed. When Alan Pardew left, the emphasis appeared to be on simply hiring any old coach as long as Newcastle stay in the Premier League. Hence John Carver

Steve McClaren has now remained in the job for far too long at St James' Park despite his inept performance to date and, for a while, it looked like there would always be three teams worse than the Magpies in the Premier League no matter how low they sank.

But Sunderland may have ruined that approach for Newcastle, as they are already ahead of the Tyneside outfit and can only increase their lead from here.

The Black Cats have the perfect manager for relegation run-ins in Sam Allardyce.

And that's a worry for Newcastle as the nearest other team to them in the Premier League are Swansea City - a whole six points above McClaren's men.

The odds of Newcastle winning back-to-back games are stacked against them. So their only hope is to finish above Sunderland to stay up. A terrible plan in the first place - it now looks like a failed one, as anyone would fancy Big Sam to come through this battle ahead of his former club...
