There may not have been any silverware on offer in part two of the instalment between Liverpool and Manchester City this week but the significance of this result shouldn't be lost as Liverpool responded to a penalty shoot-out defeat with a comprehensive 3-0 win at Anfield.
Adam Lallana opened the scoring from distance before James Milner doubled the lead against his old club. Roberto Firmino rounded off the scoring just before the hour mark, and it could have been more as Milner and Joe Allen both had opportunities to make it four.
The significance of this result is that City missed an opportunity to close the gap on the three sides ahead of them in the title race, who all dropped points this week, while Liverpool are bizarrely six points off the top four, something which seems utterly bonkers given their lack of consistency this season.
Jurgen Klopp's side will be hoping to keep up this kind of momentum when they face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park this weekend ahead of a huge Europa League double header with Manchester United, while City will be keen to bounce back and pull themselves back into the title race, which is certainly not lost in this season - even if they are currently 10 points off the pace.
