The midfielder had to be taken off shortly after coming on during their Premier League clash with Crystal Palace on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old was brought on shortly after the hour mark of the Black Cats' 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Tuesday, but had to be replaced during the latter stages of the game after clashing heads with Eagles midfielder Jordon Mutch. And his manager confirmed that having sustained a concussion, as well as a bloody face, the midfielder will be forced to miss their next game.
"Lee Cattermole unfortunately, looks like he's got concussion as well as a cut," he told the Shields Gazette.
"He's not feeling too well at the moment. He'll miss Southampton."
The news that Cattermole will not feature against Ronald Koeman's men is likely to be a big blow to Sunderland's chances of getting a positive result at St Mary's.
Although his style of play has often seen him receive criticism - though he appears to have been a lot more disciplined this season having collected just five yellow cards in the Premier League - his fighting spirit is arguably what the side need if they are to maintain their top flight status this term.
Nevertheless, with nine games to follow after the clash against the Saints, Allardyce will know how important it is that Cattermole is given enough time to fully recover to ensure that he can help their survival bid as much as possible.
