Xherdan Shaqiri's goal nine minutes from time secured a 1-0 victory for Mark Hughes' side on Wednesday night.
Stoke City were saved from a night of frustration against Newcastle United on Wednesday night as Xherdan Shaqiri's goal nine minutes from time secured a 1-0 victory for Mark Hughes' side at the Britannia Stadium.
The hosts spent the majority of the 90 minutes on top but looked as though they were going to be held to a goalless draw before the Swiss midfielder's swerving effort from 25 yards deceived Magpies goalkeeper Rob Elliot to hand them the three points.
Even then, they would have been denied the victory were it not for a stunning reflex save from Jack Butland to deny substitute Seydou Doumbia in injury time.
Marko Arnautovic hit the crossbar with virtually the last kick as Stoke tried to kill the game off, but in the end, Shaqiri's strike was enough to secure a victory which moves the Potters into seventh in the table and within five points of a European spot.
The result was met with joy from some Stoke fans, with many struggling to believe the lofty position the club are now occupying in the table.
For others, it was time to start believing that a European challenge may well be a possibility over the remaining weeks of the season.
Those are the games you have to grind out results if you want to earn your place in Europe, and we did just that, just about, tonight #SCFC— Jordan Gardner (@JordanJAGardner) March 2, 2016
Meanwhile, there was plenty of praise for Butland after the goalkeeper's superb instinctive save in injury time preserved the three points.
Played stoke. Another three valuables. Butland amazing amazing keeper. Should be highest earner. #scfc— johnathan corbett (@townsendstoke) March 2, 2016
