Report: Newcastle United hit with double injury blow before Stoke City match

St James Park

Newcastle United are set to face Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium later this evening.

According to a report in the Chronicle, Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has fresh fitness concerns ahead of his side’s match against Stoke City later this evening.

Both Andros Townsend and Papiss Cisse have picked up injuries in training recently, leaving them needing to be assessed before the match.

Cisse has not played for Newcastle since December, but he was expected to make his comeback at the Britannia Stadium tonight.

However, it seems that the Senegalese front man has suffered a set back in his recovery.

Townsend, meanwhile, has made a very positive start to life at St. James' Park after joining from Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.

The England international winger has shown his quality already, and if he isn’t fit then it will be a major blow for McClaren.

Although the Chronicle suggests that Townsend’s injury isn’t considered to be too serious, he will be assessed before Newcastle announce their line-up against Stoke.

If the Magpies are able to win in the Potteries later this evening they will move out of the relegation zone.
