The West Ham star is currently below the former Newcastle United man in the French pecking order.
The attacking midfielder arrived from Marseille in the summer and has been a revelation in the Premier League this season.
However his excellent form has not helped his international chances.
The 28-year-old has 15 caps for France but their head coach Didier Deschamps has made it clear that he has no interest in calling up for the Euros.
That has left many dumbfounded, especially as Hatem Ben Arfa earned a call-up due to his resurgent form with Nice in Ligue 1.
The suggestion that the former Newcastle United player is superior to Payet was not met with joy by Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas at the weekend (27/02/2016). He had this to say about the situation, also comparing Payet to Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez:
"That's Deschamps' opinion in that case. Either he is being extremely loyal to some of these players because you can't tell me that he (Payet) is not better than (Hatem) Ben Arfa.
"I think this season he has been the best (attacking player in the Premier League). We can't say enough about Vardy and Mahrez but for me he is a better player. He is a better all-round player.
"Because he puts in the hard yards, he can take people on. They are different, because Majrez is a bit of a trickster and a winger.
"Payet can do all that, but maybe not as often. But he also does the hard stuff."
Payet may be in top form but it would appear that no matter what he does in the remainder of the current campaign the stubborn French boss is unlikely to give him a reprieve for the Euros.
Which is good news for everyone else, but not Les Bleus.
